Herbs Join Us Together
Welcome to the West Virginia Herb Association. We hope to see you at this year's work-shops, field trips, and conferences. If you are new to our group we want to give you an herbal welcome and explain a little bit about how the organization works. Our dues are assessed annually and are renewed in January. To be included in the annual Directory, published in February, you must be a current member as of Jan. 31st. If you are renewing your membership, we thank you for your support.
Our Association was formed in 1992, as a result of a dozen or so of us coming together to organize the first WV Herb Conference in cooperation with WVU Extension Service. Myra Bonhage-Hale coordinated the committee that hosted that first one-day conference at Jackson's Mill. Our Association arose from that committee, and we've grown to involve 670 plus herb lovers over the years; not only in West Virginia, but in all the surrounding states as well. The Fall Conferences continue, and we also have had some in the spring. At these events knowledgeable and widely experienced keynote presenters from around the country and Canada have come to share their experiences and know-how with us. We've presented workshops on a wide variety of topics that support your needs for information for personal use or to develop your business. And we've witnessed the establishment of new herb-related businesses and the expansion of many others.
In an attempt to serve such a widely scattered group, in 1998 we divide the state into 7 regions. The concept is intended to support networking among the members on a local scale, so regular meetings and events could go on all over the state throughout the year. We hope that local events would strengthen relationships between members, facilitate exchange of ideas, promote community support for our herbal businesses, and raise awareness of herbs and their many uses. We also hope these local activities would help everyone become familiar with the Herb Association and its educational purposes. Some of our best events over the years have involved planting herb gardens in public places such as schools, Fort New Salem (a living history museum), and on the Capitol grounds in Charleston.
Some of the regions have many members within their borders and well-developed schedules of activities each year. Others struggle as the distance is great and there are too few members. You can help by volunteering to help in your area. We want to know what you will like to see happen in your local area and at the state level. You can also contact us by visiting our website at: www.wvherb.org.
There you will find information on upcoming events and contact information for all officers of the group as well as links to many herb businesses and herbal information. Check it regularly and encourage others to do the same. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Ann Schenk, our webmaster, at the email address given on the website.
Lynn Lassiter is our newsletter editor. The newsletters are published quarterly approximately on Jan.1st, April 1st, Jul. 1st, and Oct. 1st. Articles must be submitted 30 days before each publication date. You can receive the newsletters by email or P.O. Please keep us informed of address changes for either so you won't miss an issue. The articles share the knowledge and inspiration of our members.
This Association belongs to its members. We join together to enjoy herbs. We enjoy cooking with herbs, crafting with herbs, growing herbs, marketing herbs, researching herbs, using herbs medicinally, using herbs for health and beauty, learning and teaching about herbs, networking about herbs for sale and use, and simply treasuring the herbs for their unique spirit, beauty and merit.
Our theme is: "come, and bring a friend". We encourage you to get to know your fellow members-submit articles to the newsletter-host a meeting-make suggestions-volunteer to circulate flyers and brochures-tell others about us and invite them to come to workshops and meetings with you
Our Board members are here to listen to your ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Let us know how the Association can serve you.
